Characters of a Leader: Louder than Words!

Image
In the last couple of weeks I have had the opportunity to sit in about 30 interviews for various positions in student leadership, at the school I teach. As a teacher I have the privilege to watch many of these students in class and interact with them on the campus. In reading some of the applications I could not help but to think, “Great application, but why do I not see it in class or on the campus?” What was written on paper did not show itself with others. Through the process the main question that came to my mind as I sat there and listened to the questions and answers was, “What have you done to prepare yourself to serve in this position?” “Do your actions speak louder than your words?” During this process of interviews, God brought me to James. It was one of those moments where the Scriptures jump out at you! In James 2:14-26 we are given a challenge by James on the importance of faith and deeds. Yet it is verse 24 I want to take a look at. “You see that a person is justifi

OK…with all of this doomsday stuff going on, I cannot help but to comment on it. I have heard the jokes all week. People are making Rapture jokes like there is no tomorrow!   My students and I have discussed this in class many times. So being an observer of our culture, bare with me as I give my observations. I truly believe that something good is going to come out of this! Three areas I want to cover, Anger, Lack of Knowledge, Opportunity. Anger As I have watched the news reports and Youtube videos a sense of anger has stirred my heart. Anger towards one, who as a leader and carrier of God’s Word, would speak recklessly on an issue that clearly states in Matthew 24:36, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Again the person who said this reiterates his idea in verse 42 by saying, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” The word “Therefore” when used in Scripture always meant,

“Then David said to Solomon his son, ‘Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the LORD God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished.” David’s charge to Solomon to build the Temple, prior to his death. 1 Chronicles 28:20 This is the time of the year that I receive graduation announcements from students past and students present. It is an exciting time of the year, yet challenging! Let me explain. It is during this time of the year that I have to battle the seniors to keep their attention! Once the first week of May hits they see the finish line and are mentally checked out! It can be frustrating at times, yet the best times in class come in these last few weeks. In my senior Bible class, sometimes I have had to close my lesson book because a discussion pops up that deals with life, faith and their future. For many, in the midst of the excitement, rea

Spring Series Prt 4: Leaders, Stand in MY Council to Receive Your Vision

“Therefore,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me. Yes,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, ‘The LORD declares.’ Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” declares the LORD. “They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,” declares the LORD.  (Jeremiah 23:30-32) This week I would like to share some observations on this passage and then leave you with an encouraging word. Hang in there with me, because I believe this could challenge you, just as it has challenged me. I would like to point out the following observations: “words supposedly from me”, “wag their own tongues”, “lead my people astray with their reckless lies”, “I did not send or appoint them”, and “They do not benefit these people in the least”. Each of these phrases describes a negative. The

Spring Series: Leaders - Stand in MY Council to Receive the Anointing

Jeremiah is facing a situation. The spiritual leaders were supposedly “receiving” words for the people of Israel, from God. The words spoken seemed to minister to the people, yet, God asked the question, “How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds?”( Jer. 23:26). The anointing that came with the position of leadership was not bathed in the presence of God, it came from man. How many times have we sought out the approval of others before coming to God? How many times have we bought a book in hopes to receive the power of the “now”, rather than coming before God who will cover us in His power? How many times have we bought into others secrets to attract people to us, instead of going to the One who is all knowing and everywhere present? This is not to bring shame, but a challenge. My dear brothers and sisters who are followers of Christ, when we stand in the council of God first, I believe God will surprise you in ways
