From the Classroom – Summer Session: The 4Bq’s Worked!

Image
One Sunday morning as I walked through the foyer of church I was approached by an older woman in her fifties. With a serious look on her face she asked me, "Hey! Why do you believe what you believe?” It caught me off guard! I chuckled, thinking I was going to get a short sermon from this precious lady. For a second there was silence, and she asked again, "Why do you believe, what you believe?" I finally realized that this was no joke or a short sermon; she was very sincere in her question. Feeling fearful of saying the wrong thing, I needed to know what she believed, so I asked, "Miss, what do you believe?". She then replied, "A friend invited me to church this morning, so I came. I do not agree with what is going on here; I've never seen people worship God like this, and I do not understand. I am a Jehovah's Witness." I was taken back. What do I say? My heart started beating fast. My mind went blank! Then the Holy Spirit reminded me of the

Happy Fathers' Day: It Starts With You!

First allow me to give a “man grunt” to all the men out there who are dads! Happy Fathers’ Day! In 1909 Sonora Smart Dodd heard a sermon on Mothers’ Day. As a child her mother had passed away and the duties of raising a young girl fell on the shoulders of her father. During difficult times her father’s sacrifice, love and words laid down a strong foundation in Sonora’s life. To show her gratitude and appreciation towards her father, she decided to celebrate her daddy in June of 1910, on his birthday…June 19th. In 1926, a national Fathers’ Day Committee was formed, with a recognition from Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. It was not until 1972 that President Nixon established it as a permanent national observance. Today I write to you with a burden on my heart to all dads. Working with young people these last twenty-three years, you see a lot. I have seen students grow up with no fathers. I have watched fathers walk out of their life. I hear the stories from students who have

Right and Wrong...A Matter of the Heart

This past week has been a reflection of our culture. A mother is put on trial for the death of her child, which seems to be based on her selfishness to have a good time. We have seen another congressman scandal. Even as I write this, news just broke that he is asking to take a leave of absence, but will not step down as a congressman. Maybe it’s the 56% of constituents who say he should stay, that has helped him make his decision. Fellow colleges cry for his resignation not based on the idea that he did wrong, “but it is something we need to deal with so we can move on and get on with business.” I have even heard the following statements from people on the street on the radio and TV, “No big deal, it’s a private matter.” “What he does in his personal time is his business.” Today I write to you as a pastor/apologist who needs to share an observation and a challenge. This entry has nothing to do with business or leadership. From hearing the accusations towards a mother, to the thoughts o
