Preparing the Body of Christ Series: Part 1 - Systematic Theology

Image
For the next couple of weeks I am going to bring you to class with me! For the next eight weeks I want to challenge your mind! As a believer in Christ Jesus living in a relativistic culture, the body of Christ is continuing to be challenged at every level. Yet the body of Christ (the church) is anemic when it comes to providing an answer to the claims that we make concerning the creation of the world, to the validity of Christ and argument of absolute truths. I hope that this series in the next few weeks will challenge you to prepare yourself to have an answer. In the words of Paul, “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers[a] of this world, rather than from Christ.” Colossians 2:8 (NLT) To study systematic theology means bringing us to the text (Scripture)and asking what does the text say concerning a topic of interest, whether it be a social (abortion) or doctrinal issue (is there ...
“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” -Maria Robinson On this 100th post I would like to dedicated it to my auntie. Angela was born on January 1, 1925 in Pearsal, Texas to my grandparents Gerardo and Sostenes Limon. She was the second child of six born to my grandparents. In 1930 the family moved to Monterey, Mexico where they resided for a number of years before moving back to the United States in the early 40’s. Angela was my auntie…mi tia. She was 87 years old and died from her disease of dementia that she battled for over five years. Last night was her memorial service and today we bury her. Yet in the midst of sorrow there is joy! First, the joy of knowing that mi tia is with the Lord! Even though she struggled to remember names and faces, she knew how to pray and sing the chorusitos (little hymns) from church. I remember one of the last times that I saw here, she was in the middle stages of her illness and in our con...

Do Not Lose Your Curiosity!

Image
This past week I was at the gym getting my work out done on the treadmill. As I was viewing the televisions before me, a caption came across that grabbed my attention….China Unveils 5yr plan for space exploration. Megan Kelly from Fox News was going to interview former astronaut Gene Cerman to get his thoughts on this news alert. Gene Cerman was commander of Apollo 17 and the last man to touch the surface of the moon in December of 1972. What other great person would have insight, than the last person to set foot on the moon, concerning this new announcment? When asked the question concerning the United States decline interest into space exploration, I heard the wisdom and the pain of an elder speak to a younger generation. “I made those steps 40 years ago. We knocked on the door of the future, it was for the following generations to walk through it…and who knows where they would be now and what would it mean to the future, not only for our country, but also for mankind. But we hav...

From the Classroom: Christ Birth a Hoax?

Image
Its that time of the year when churches bring out the garland and perform big Christmas events in hopes that the masses come in. We begin to see the sermon titles about Christ and the meaning of Christmas. It is also at this time we begin to see the challenge against Christ and his birth. A little over a year ago I was listening to the radio and an evangelist was sharing the Christmas story. This is a story that I have heard a hundred times over, yet this time I listened from a skeptic’s point of view. I will admit, the story sounded crazy! A virgin birth? An angel proclaiming the birth? So I began ask myself the very same questions a skeptic would ask. How can we know that it’s true? Could it be a myth? Did the authors of the Gospels get it wrong? Where’s the proof? How would I answer someone if asked the questions of doubt? I never was challenged as a child, teenager or adult to rethink the possibility that it was a fraud. I could give a good church answer, but what about critically ...

Enjoy Life!

Image
Wanting to beat the Thanksgiving crowd we left Southern California late last night and arrived home this morning …2:30am to be exact! We had a great visit with family. Good food! Lots of laughs and good memories! As our families grow, each visit gets harder and harder to leave. After a visit with my brother and his family, we took off into the night to catch the 99. During the drive home you get some thinking time, and I kept coming back to the last words of my “good-bye” with Sandy, my brother’s mother-in-law…”Enjoy life.” Those words, so simple, yet hit me like a ton of bricks. Let me explain. Sandy and Lloyd are missionaries. Lloyd is a contractor at heart, and so he uses his gift by building churches and orphanages overseas. Sandy loves people! When you walk into her presence you sense the love of God flow out of her. She always looks for ways to serve the locals wherever she is at. This couple has traveled the world and impacted so many lives! Including mine! I had the opportuni...

Stones of Remembrance

Image
I love this time of the year! Thanksgiving week kicks off the holiday season! So many memories and so much to be thankful for! The day my parents brought my brother home and I held him for the first time. Going to McDonald's with my grandfather as a little boy. Christmas day at grandma and grandpa's house. The day I gave me heart to Christ. My wedding day. The birth of my children. I could go. Each memory is like a stone of remembrance. In the Old Testament it was common for people to put up a "stone of remembrance" that shared an event that took place on the site. We do the same today, they are called historical markers. About a month ago I was traveling to a soccer match in the foothills and came to a single road out in nowhere! It was a small town with about five or six homes. It was odd to me. Where did this little town, no bigger than a football field come from? As we drove through I passed a landmark! I had to stop and read it, I was really curious. Come to find...
