Part 1: The Rise of Christian Mysticism in the Church

About a year ago I was talking with a couple who I look up to and respect. The conversation turned to church and a movement that I had heard about, but really never understood or paid attention to it.   The conversation got my attention when my friends mentioned a very popular devotional book, entitled, “Jesus Calling” by Sara Young and began to point out the signs of mysticism throughout her book.   Why it got my attention?   My daughters had received this book a few months earlier as a gift and I remember seeing my daughters read through it.   This led to research and the study of this movement.   Upon my study my eyes were opened and my ears became sensitive to key words such as, “ancient disciplines”, “experiencing God is of importance”, “I heard the voice of God say to me…”, “disciplines of our church Fathers, Lecto Divino and contemplative prayer. I Get It!

We read in Scripture that God is a jealous God.   At first that seems arrogant and even some will go as far as saying that it makes God vulnerable to sin.   We are continued to be told not to attain jealousy in our everyday life.   Yet we read in Exodus 20:4-5, “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God …”   Moses prior to him being taken up to heaven, warns the Hebrew children, “Be careful not to forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the Lord your God has forbidden. For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God .” (Deuteronomy 4:23-24).   Even Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:21-22 states, “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s...
